L-Body Clusters

This page got it's start when I discovered it was not as easy to find a replacement cluster face for my '78 Horizon as I thought it should be.  It seems for the first three model years for the L-bodies the clusters cosmetics changed in some minor way.

'78 L-body Cluster

Out of the standard clusters in the '78 to '83 L-bodies the '78 is my favorite of the older style and was the only year that a temp gauge was in the cluster.  This cluster was as fully gauged as you were going to get on any cluster offered until 1984.  Even the rallye cluster introduced with the 2 door 024/TC3 models in 1979 offered the same gauges as the standard cluster, but in a different format.  We'll talk more on that cluster later.  On the left side idiot lights were from top to bottom:  left turn signal, high beam indicator, and seat belt reminder.  On the right side was right turn signal, brake warning, and oil pressure.

'79 L-body Cluster

The 1979 cluster differs a bit from the 1978 one.  The temp gauge is now gone and the voltmeter moves to it's place.  Where the volt meter was is now an idiot light for temp & oil. Gas gauge stayed the same.  On the left side idiot lights were from top to bottom:  left turn signal, high beam, and seat belt reminder.  On the right side was right turn signal and brake.

'80 L-body Cluster

Again changes in the '80 cluster.  The biggest difference is the location for the turn signal indicators position was changed.
